Something has dug out a bees nest in my garden lawn?

I now have a hole about six inches deep and twelve inches square. Only about six bees plus queen still in nest and they do not look very happy. Large claw marks around hole. What can have done this? We no longer have domestic pets of our own but claw marks are way to big for a cat..
